music

i studied music composition at Columbia College Chicago. this included ear training, arranging, and writing for both concert and media settings. i mostly focus on music for electronics and piano, and release music under the alias "of_eidolons." i'm also available for commission work and scoring projects!

SIGNALS (2021)

in 2021, i used the music programming language SuperCollider to create semi-random electronic textures. i released these "signals" as a series of weekly pieces using exclusively sine waves. the entire project can also be listened to here.

the project grew from the first piece, "Alias Waltz," a 3/4 dance built around sampling and holding a single oscillator's pitch sweep up. both the left and right channels' sounds come from the same source, but the right channel is grabbing and sustaining frequencies at set points, giving the impression of chordal accompaniment, while the left channel continues, giving an atonal sweeping effect.

looking at the results in Supercollider's oscilloscope, i was struck by the visual interplay of pure sine tones at varying intervals. this provided a basis for the rest of the project: writing music based on their visual representations. this comes through the clearest in pieces like "firelight," where both sounds and visuals mimic the wings of insects on a summer night, and "turn," where percussive elements follow their title as they pan in space.

Intermission from Isolation (2020)

in late 2020, i performed a set of piano and electronic music for the online experimental "Intermission from Isolation" series. this also included 19 minutes of original visuals, designed and animated by myself. my set can be viewed here.

the set consists of 4 pieces: Lichtenberg MKII, Germaine Tailleferre's Pastorale for Piano (1919), Decay Mechanism, and Seams. except for the Tailleferre piece, all music was written by myself. Lichtenberg MKII and Decay Mechanism began as sound design sketches in Supercollider, with percussion and piano coming later. Seams began as a piano piece years ago, and grew into some kind of distorted ballad over the years.

Student VR Game Scoring (2018)

in 2018/2019, i had the chance to work with some game design students at Columbia, and wrote music for their capstone projects. you can listen to both pieces here and play the game here.

Germaine Tailleferre - Pastorale (2020)

at Columbia, i had the chance to write for and play in the New Music Ensemble, arranging a piece by the French composer Germaine Tailleferre for our unconventional instrumentation. you can listen to it here.

Archival Hunger (2019)

in 2019, i revised an old electronic demo for Columbia College Chicago's New Music Ensemble. this midterm performance is imperfect, but it remains special to me. you can hear it here.

&variations (2020)

for the class Styles and Analysis, i extensively studied the stylistic elements of Herbie Hancock's music leading up to his solo on "Ostinato (A Suite for Angela)," culminating in this 43 minute combination performance/video essay.

in it, i chart Herbie Hancock's influences from vocal pop to jazz Pianists to contemporary funk, performing excerpts from memory and analyzing them with accompanying transcriptions.

Weeklies (2019)

in 2019, i produced a series of rough visuals alongside piano pieces, each written and (phone) recorded in a week. you can listen to 'condensed,' from that series, here.
